As documented by our recent insta post, project Roundhouse is well underway! Clearing litter and small vegetation from the Roundhouse’s inside and outside edges to give the monument a crispier edge, further emphasised by the strip of cobbles which now clearly circulates the structure.
And before you all start, nooooo FOMV are not obsessed with the neat n tidy edges of manicured lawns. In fact, seeing the structure we can visualise how we’d grow grapes on the warm sun-kissed south-facing brick walls, whilst the opposite shadier and cooler side would provide the perfect conditions for the Clematis’s beautiful purple flowers, ensuing the roots are kept damp and cool whilst the flowers sit themselves at the top of the wall, basking in the Manc sun.
Designing the rest of the Garden is also well underway with these initial ideas ready to be shared with you soon and local community consultation starting also very soon, as we want your ideas!
This coming week me and The Dave are finishing up the area cleared out next to the river Meddy, with some steps and bench coming your way. Then even more benches are going in on the Roundhouse site, as we begin to make our obvious mark and encourage people to linger and take-a-chill-pill in our soon to be garden.
Used already on-site, ‘Beswick Bricks’ are a great AND FREE material to use for our projects. Pulled from the river bottom where years of river retaining walls have crumbled, these Beswick-marked bricks were produced in pits within what is now North Ridge Recreational Area. Just a bricks-throw-away, they’re perfect for the job and offer an insight into the rich, varied history of Beswick.
Keep your eyes and ears peeled for volunteer opportunities so we can make some more Beswick history!
See you about,
Alex, FOMV
